Immune retune: Recharging your body’s natural defences

Very interesting article about immune system (New Scientist)

“ACHOO!” A sniffling friend is sneezing just inches away. You would love to cover your face or run away, but in the interests of politeness all you can do is try not to inhale in their direction and hope your immune system is on the case.

Some people seem to catch everything that is doing the rounds, from coughs and colds to stomach bugs. Other people never seem to get ill. What’s their secret?

A lot is down to dumb luck. There are some things affecting the performance of your immune system that you cannot change: your age, your gender, your genes, and most importantly, whether or not you have had a previous brush with an invading bug.

But there are plenty of factors you can control. I’m not talking about downing supplements sold as “immune boosters”; the claims for most such pills are not based on hard evidence. But there are plenty of other ways you can keep your immune system revved up and raring to go.

It’s not all about boosting activity, though. Many common conditions are caused by the immune system reacting to things it shouldn’t. When it attacks parts of the body the result is autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. When it responds to molecules that are foreign but harmless, like those from pollen or peanuts, the result is asthma, eczema or allergies. Again, there are ways of encouraging your immune system to behave. So help it out by following these tips. Red more here:

Sea Salt Vs Table Salt: Which is the better choice?

Ordinary table salt has been stripped of its companion elements and contains additive. In studies, table salts have been linked to hypertension and other heart or blood illness. Table salt also gives many people the feeling of being bloated.

Natural sea salt is a healthy replacement for ordinary table salt on the market; it contains about 80 mineral elements that the body needs. Sea salt has nutrients and minerals that help your body preserve the blood cells. Overall, sea salts are better for you. If you haven’t tried it, switch salts for a week and you will see a difference.

Sea salt is more expensive than table salt. If you are going to buy sea salt or kosher salt for the health benefits make sure that the packages say unrefined. This makes the difference of how much of the natural minerals are still in the salt. Since unrefined salt has more moisture if you are going to use it in a shaker pur some uncooked rice in as well to help break up any clumps that will form.

Whether you use sea salt, table salt or some other type of salt, most experts recommend between 1,500 and 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day for healthy adults

Know what you’re eating before you place your order

Fit Tip: There is nothing like having Breakfast for every meal, but know what you’re eating before you place your order. Home Fries: the breakfast equivalent of French Fries, it’s like waking up on the wrong side of the nutritional bed. The carb boost might give you an initial surge of energy, but you’ll be running on empty long before your next meal.
